Physician Billing Guide
Can I bill for my physician visits once my patient elects hospice?
YES!! A primary care physician not affiliated or under contract with the hospice may bill Medicare for services provided to a hospice patient.
Modifiers are the key!
Which scenario works for you?
• Primary physician’s visit is related to the patient’s terminal diagnosis:
Modifier to use: GV
• Primary physician’s visit is not related to the patient’s terminal diagnosis:
Modifier to use: GW
• Covering physician is a member of the primary physician’s practice:
Modifier to use: Q5 & GV or GW
• Covering physician is not a member of the primary physician’s practice: Modifier to use: Q6 & GV or GW
